In 1860, an Anglo-French force defeats Chinese troops at the Battle of Baliqiao in the Second Opium War.

In 1898, China’s empress-mother Ci X seizes power and ends the Hundred Days’ Reform (a failed 104-day national cultural, political and educational reform movement) and placed the Guangxu Emperor under house arrest for supporting reformers.

In 1949, the Chinese Communist leaders proclaim People’s Republic of China on mainland China.

In 1979, Chinese-Australian model and actor Jaymee Ong is born in Australia.

In 1985, Gu Long, a Taiwanese writer of wuxia novels, a genre of Chinese fiction concerning the adventures of martial artists, dies in Taipei at 47.
