Today in the history of Singapore: September 21st

In 1965, Singapore is the 117th member state which is admitted in the United Nations, thus receiving international recognition as a sovereign and independent country.

Singapore applied for UN membership less than a month after it separated from Malaysia on August 9, 1965. Apart from Malaysia, UK, Jordan and Ivory Coast also sponsored Singapore’s application to the UN where it received unanimous support.
