Nick McGrath is a Bangkok-based Australian photographer and photojournalist who has been exploring the cultures and subcultures of South East Asia for more than a decade.

1. You’ve been in Thailand for so long, it’s obvious that you have a true passion for South East Asia, so what’s your origin story?

2. One of my favourite places in Bangkok is Chinatown because it provides an authentic experience of what the busyness and mercantile ethos of South East Asia is really about. How do you see Bangkok’s Chinatown from the perspective of a photographer?

3. So this means that in order to take a great photograph, the place and its people matter more than what camera you use. Is it the place, the photographer, or the camera that give that final photo its special something?

4. When it comes to photography, do you use a special set up technique in getting the best shot or do you go with the flow and encounter the unexpected?

5. On your blog you discuss how a mistake in photography can lead to something beautiful. You call it “the beautiful mistake”. Can you elaborate a bit…

6. In this globalized world, do you think South East Asia in general and Thailand in particular have maintained or will be able to maintain their cultural peculiarities?

7. You have documented in quite some detailed the Chinese Opera cultural practice in Thailand. What was it that peaked your interest in this particular form of art and entertainment?

8. Let’s return to your previous comment about your yoga practice. Tell me more about how yoga has influenced both your health and your wellbeing.

9. Since you mentioned mindfulness, does mindfulness still have a role in your life? What’s your understanding of mindfulness?

10. Recently your 8-year-old son celebrated his birthday. What advice do you have, as a father, for new fathers?
