The Philippine Martial Arts in Medina, Ohio

The Philippine Martial Arts are an umbrella term used to describe many of the regional fighting styles of the various islands of the Philippines. In fact, it is said that there are as many variations and styles of Philippine Martial Arts as there are islands in the Philippines themselves. The various arts encompassed by the Philippine Martial Arts include Arnis, Escrima, and Kali. These terms are specific to different regions throughout the Philippine islands, but they all essentially borrow the same concepts from traditional Filipino combat and self-defense techniques.

The main focus of the Filipino Martial Arts is on armed combat, primarily with bladed weapons such as swords and knives. Many other weapons are used and practiced with as well, such as slings, daggers, balisongs (butterfly knives), whips, projectile weapons, and most notably, the stick. The Filipino Martial Arts place such a heavy emphasis on armed techniques because they give an edge in real combat, and are also easily translatable to unarmed tactics because they use similar movements and strikes. It is believed that if one can master weapons-based tactics and combat, that fighting with an open hand should then come naturally as the movements and strikes are similar, just without the actual weapon being in hand.

The Philippine Martial Arts are an exceptionally suited choice as a method of self-defense, having been tested and proven over centuries throughout the bloody and violent history of the people of the islands that make up the Philippines. The techniques cover a wide array of practical and real-world street fighting and combat situations, and don’t bother using fancy demonstrations that look like dances. The Filipino warrior arts are a straightforward and brutal, but highly effective discipline with a no-frills attitude. They can and will save your life should the need ever present itself.
