Japanese armor of o-yoroi type with helmet of hoshi-kabuto type

This o-yoroi – “great armour” – reproduction by Takaysu Sousyokubijyutu Co.Ltd. has a height 150 cm and contains a number of representative parts combined in a full armor.

The body and left side of the armor are created in series and the right side is not superimposed. The aperture is covered by waidate while the front is covered with hide to prevent catching the bowstring when engaged in horseback archery. The hide extends over both shoulders to the sleeves.

There is one breastplate plus plates on the left and on the right for protection of both sides when the arms are lifted to shoot an arrow. Materials for protecting the tights are designed to safeguard the samurai while astride a horse. A star helmet called hoshi-kabuto, completes the armor’s ensemble.

The display was part of “The Spirit of Budo Expo: The History of Japan’s Martial Arts” held in 2012 at G23 Art Gallery in Bangkok, Thailand. Watch the video below for details:
