If ‘Clothes make the man’ then ‘Venues make the event’

In the past few months I had participated at quite a few memorable events and, later on, I realized that they wouldn’t have been as successful as they were if it hadn’t been for the great venues they were held in.

The first event I’d like to mention here was my students’ graduation prom which was held, after much debate and ‘venue scouting,’ at Grande Sheraton Sukhumvit in Bangkok. Not only that it is a five star hotel, it is also strategically located in the heart of Bangkok, right next to the skytrain. Thus, even though I live on the outskirts of the Thai capital, it was easy for me to reach the place using the public transportation system and avoid the traffic congestions Bangkok is known to have.

Then I attended Thailand Princess Cup, the biggest indoor archery tournament in Thailand which was held at Fashion Island, a huge shopping mall on Ramintra Road in Bangkok. Actually, this venue has been used for this particular competition for the last few years and the event now also attracts international archers from neighbouring countries. When you have hundreds of archers competing for the grand prize, you couldn’t have asked for a better place to organize this competition.

Lastly, it is not only Thailand that has got great venues for the hundreds of events that are being organized here yearly. Other Asian countries are also trying to keep up with the trend and hold their activities in locations that will be remembered even after the spotlights are turned off. When I attended the first stage of the Indoor Archery World Cup I was surprised by the location the organizers have chosen. The campus of a college became, for three days, the place where some of the best archers in the world had a face off in order to decide who was the best archer of the season.

There’s a saying that goes like this: ‘Clothes make the man’ – which means that you will be judged by your peers by the way you dress. Then, by extension, ‘Venues make the event,’ means that the success of an event is most likely to be remembered by the venue it is held at.
