A Chronology of Japanese History: Jomon and Yayoi Periods


Jomon Period (cca. 8000 BC – cca. 300 BC) 

February 11, 660-585 BC – The reign of the legendary Emperor Jimmu Tenno, the first Japanese emperor. The early Japanese were gatherers, hunters and fishermen. Weapons and armour develop.
581-549 BC – The reign of the legendary Emperor Suizei.
549-511 BC – The reign of the legendary Emperor Annei.
510-477 BC – The reign of the legendary Emperor Itoku.
475-393 BC – The reign of the legendary Emperor Kosho.
392-291 BC – The reign of the legendary Emperor Koan.

Yayoi Period (cca. 300 BC – cca. 300 AC)

290-215 BC – The reign of the legendary Emperor Korei. The intoduction of rice agriculture evokes the development of a social hierarchy and of hundereds of small that started to unify into larger ones.
214-158 BC – The reign of the legendary Emperor Kogen.
158-98 BC – The reign of the legendary Emperor Kaika.
97-30 BC – The reign of the legendary Emperor Sujin.
29 BC – 70 AD – The reign of the legendary Emperor Suinin.
71-130 – The reign of the legendary Emperor Keiko
131-190 – The reign of the legendary Emperor Seimu.
192-200 – The reign of the legendary Emperor Chuai.
201-269 – The reign of the Regent Jingo-Kogo (Chuai’s wife).
