1. Showcase your skills

First, display your talent by tattooing your own body. If you’re that good you won’t mind drawing on your own body as proof of your skills. This is one good advertising method. Your body will be like a bulletin that advertises your work. Next, tattoo your friends and family members. This is another great way to advertise. Instead of just one body showing off your work there will be more multiple bodies showing off your work. The more people you know who want tattoos on their body, the more business you will get. In the beginning you really don’t need to run out and locate a building for your shop. You can run your business out of your house or garage, as long as you adhere to the health requirements.

2. Apprenticeship

Even though your creative skills may be good, it won’t hurt to learn some basic skills about tattooing. You can learn from friends or another tattoo artist by working alongside them. Of course, you can also work for a tattoo shop and get experience that way. Before you work on anybody, including yourself, be sure you follow the guidelines to prevent contamination and diseases.

3. Setup

The next step is to get licensed. Be sure to check your state or city to see if tattoo artist are required to be licensed. Advertise your business. The more great work you do; the more your business will expand. Buy your own supplies. Never use anyone else’s supplies. You will need a tattoo machine, autoclave, a tattoo gun, ink, rubbing alcohol, sterile gloves and other items that will be needed.

4. Practice clean habits

After you’ve opened your tattoo business and have everything in place, one of the most important things to remember is to clean your tattoo equipment thoroughly. To prevent contamination and diseases, Tattoo equipment must be kept clean. Infected machines or needles can cause serious, and even deadly, diseases such as AIDS and Hepatitis.

Never reuse needles. It doesn’t matter if you use an autoclave. The autoclave may not completely clean the needle each time, and you can never be certain that it will. Don’t put the public or your business at risk by engaging in unclean tactics. When you throw away needles, throw be sure to throw them away in a large container.

Use gloves at all times to protect you. Be sure to thoroughly clean tubes, tattoo equipment, and other materials used each day. Keep everything separate. Since these items are all biohazardous materials or waste, you will need to properly dispose of them. Find out where biohazardous waste is to be deposited in your city.

5. Keep it safe

Don’t let children linger around in your shop. Children should not be allowed in a tattoo shop since these materials can be easily found and obtained. Make sure containers with disposed items are securely closed and/or locked at all times.
