Thailand Travel Guide: Experiencing the Land of Smiles

Thailand is a destination that is on almost everyone’s wish list. There are so many things to do and see in this country that it’s impossible to resist. Though it might seem like an expensive place to travel to. Saving money on the flight means that you can spend more on all the experiences Thailand has to offer.

Thailand is a culturally rich country, but don’t discount shopping as an activity while visiting. Bangkok’s city centre includes one of the largest shopping districts in the world which offers anything from discount shopping at the MBK Centre, to luxury shopping at the Siam Paragon. Most shopping facilities are located within easy walking distance from the city’s quick and convenient Skytrain.

To cover Bangkok’s cultural attractions, hop on the river boat service and visit the Grand Palace. The former home of Thailand’s royal family, this colourful compound is a maze of stunning 18th century Thai architecture that has remained intact and perfectly preserved throughout the centuries. Nearby Wat Arun gives visitors an opportunity to explore Thailand’s spiritual Buddhist side, and from there do not miss the city’s old town/Chinatown for the atmosphere and excellent food.

From Bangkok there are several shuttles and trains to popular destinations outside the city. The country’s ancient capital of Ayutthaya is as easy day trip from Bangkok, and has on display the ruins of a city that once rivaled the wealth of Paris, and was the region’s most powerful city. Tour the grounds on an elephant or by foot, and be sure to stop by the floating market for traditional Thai food. A few hours west of Bangkok lies Kanchanaburi, which is home to the Bridge over the River Kwai and several WWII cemeteries and museums. The area also boasts stunning nature parks perfect for a day’s hike.

Within an easy flight connection from Bangkok are Phuket and Chiang Mai. The first is a tropical beach paradise complete with thatched beach huts, warm water and stunning scenery. Phuket is the favoured choice of beach-lovers and celebrities for the perfect holiday getaway. The latter is located in Northern Thailand and is surrounded by mountainous jungle and the tribes of indigenous peoples. Visitors to the area usually indulge in backpacking through the jungle and stopping by to help out at the local elephant sanctuary. Other favoured destinations are the incredibly gorgeous islands. The Phi Phi Islands in particular, are very special places.

So whether you’re in search of a modern metropolis, quintessential beach getaway, or jungle retreat, keep Thailand at the top of your list. Come and visit here as there’s never been a better time to visit the Land of Smiles.
