The Matrix birthdays: Ada Nicodemou (aka Dujour)

Ada Nicodemou is a Greek Cypriot-born Australian actress who was born on May 14, 1977. To the fans of The Matrix, she is also known as Dujour – the latex-clad girl with the white rabbit tattoo on the back of her left shoulder. This is why she is also known as the White Rabbit Girl.

The first and last time we meet Dujour is in The Matrix, in the company of her boyfriend, Choi, who invites Neo to a goth club as they feel that he needs to “unplug.” In French, “dujour” means “of the day.” Seeing her tattoo – after the computer screen told him to “Follow the white rabbit” – Neo accepts their invitation and subsequently meets Trinity at the club, thus setting up the stage for the future development of the storyline.

The “white rabbit” detail is definitely an allusion to Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, where Alice, just like Neo, follows the White Rabbit in to Wonderlands, whereas Neo ends up in the “real world.”

the-matrix-and-the-alice-booksMy intertextual study The Matrix and the Alice Books looks at the way Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass have influenced some of the ideas put forth by Andy and Larry Wachowski. The book is now available as a Kindle ebook too.
