World Teachers’ Day: What you need to know about October 5

World Teachers’ Day is celebrated annually on October 5.

Here are 10 things you should know about World Teachers’ Day:

1. On this day in 1994, UNESCO adopted the Status of Teachers which established the rights and responsibilities of teachers.

2. The day commemorates teacher’s organizations worldwide with the aim to show support for teachers.

3. World Teachers’ Day is a token of awareness, understanding, and appreciation of all teachers around the world.

4. Education International, a global union federation, advocates for the international recognition and celebration of teachers around the world.




5. Although most countries have a National Teachers’ Day, UNESCO wishes to recognize global teachers as they produce global citizens.

6. Over 100 countries today observe World Teachers’ Day.

7. According to UNESCO, teachers “continue to face challenges brought about by staff shortages, poor training and low status.”

8. To meet the demands of a growing world population, by 2020, countries will need to recruit a total of 10.9 million primary teachers.

9. By 2030, the world will need a total of 25.8 million additional primary school teachers.
