In India, auto rickshaws are the cheaper versions of taxis.

Here are 10 things you should know about India’s auto rickshaws:

1. A ride in an old rickshaw costs half the price of a taxi.

2. The auto rickshaws have no doors or seat belts and are commonly called just “autos”.

3. An auto rickshaw’s maximum speed reaches only up to 30 km/h.

4. The Rickshaw Run is an event that is held several times a year and it involves teams driving autos along different routes across India.

5. The auto rickshaws are used mainly for short distances rather than long ones.

6. Compared to modern cars, auto rickshaws are more environment-friendly and run on compressed natural gas (or CNG).

7. The auto rickshaw was designed to carry four passengers, including the driver.

8. Six-seater rickshaws exist around India, except in Pune where it is banned.

9. Newer versions of auto rickshaws have their engines in the rear, while the older versions have the engine below the driver’s seat.

10. To help speed up traffic and avoid congestions, auto rickshaws are not allowed in the southern part of Mumbai.
