Keep reading down below to learn more about home security while you travel.

1. Ask Your Friends for Help

One of the easiest ways to make sure that your home is secure while you’re gone is to ask some of your friends to keep an eye on the house while you’re gone. This can either be by them heading over there for an hour or two a day or even staying there while you’re gone. We’re sure that your friends are going to be happy to help out! If not, you can always hire someone to house-sit while you’re on your travels.

2. Don’t Tip Off Any Criminals Online

You should never post your detailed vacation details online on any social media networks before or during your vacation. When you do this, you are easily tipping off any criminals that your house is in open season during those dates. Sure, it’s tempting to let people know when you’ll be gone and you can still do that without giving out super exact details. Anyone can see whatever you put out there on your social media networks!

3. Tip Off the Police

If you’re going to be away from your house for a long period of time, you can consider speaking with the police to let them know of your plans. They may be able to send an extra patrol around to check on everything while you’re gone.

4. Keep the Curtains as You Always Do

You might be tempted to shut the curtains tight when you’re out on vacation. However, when you do this, you’re not only keeping out the eyes of criminals, but also those people that could help in the case of a break-in. The police or your neighbors won’t be able to see into your house when you close those curtains tight. Go ahead and keep the curtains as you would if you were home! However, make sure you close your garage door that you automated with Garage Automatics.

5. Don’t Leave the Lights On

You might also think that it’s best to keep your lights on when you’re not at home so it seems as if you are. However, this is only going to drive up your electricity bill and will not fend off criminals. Because who’s going to keep their lights on in the early hours of the morning? Criminals will surely figure that you’re on vacation when they see your lights on in those hours and for long periods of time.

6. Stop Your Mail

If you don’t stop your mail and newspapers before you head out on vacation, this could be a serious tip-off for criminals. When they see a lot of mail piled up in your mailbox or on your front step, then this will tell them that you’re not home and your house is ripe for the picking. If you can’t stop your mail, then you can always have your neighbor come over to pick it up for you.

7. Have Someone Check Your Faucets

Another big part of the safety of your home while you’re away is your pipes. If you’re heading off to a sunny destination during the winter time, then you should have a friend come over every couple of days to check on the faucets to ensure your pipes haven’t frozen over. If only a few drops come out, then that’s a good sign that you’ve got some frozen pipes on your hand.

Each of these tips are going to ensure that your house stays safe while you’re out on your holiday vacation. Make sure to follow these to ensure that no criminals find their way into your home and that nothing too damaging happens while you’re out.
