While wondering on the streets of Taipei, I ran across Tianhou Temple and went inside to have a look. I was pleasantly surprise to see that the temple’s small courtyard also has a nicely decorated pond with koi fish.

Here are 5 things you should know about koi fish:

  1. Koi fish are ornamental Japanese fish which derive their name from the Japanese word “nishikigoi” which basically means “brocaded carp”.
  1. Koi fish come in various colours, but the most common ones are white, black, red, yellow, blue, and cream.
  1. Although we now have special food for koi fish, they are basically omnivorous fish and can eat different kinds of foods, including peas, lettuce, and watermelon.
  1. If released in the wild, koi fish will revert, within a few generations, to the original coloration of the common carp (yellowish/brownish).
  1. Breeding koi fish can be a great lucrative business as they sell well, with prices going as high as $3000 US for just one fish.
